Just finished the first trade of The Unwritten by Mike Carey and Peter Gross. The concept for the main character appears to be what if Christoper Robin Milne had been written into a Harry Potter universe instead of a young children's animal fantasy series. Tom Taylor is the son of Wilson Taylor, creator of the incredibly popular and famous Tommy Taylor series of 13 books about a boy wizard. Wilson Taylor disappeared 10 years ago, and Tom has been making the rounds of the literary and fantasy conventions signing books he "starred in" in order to make ends meet. Someone in a panel audience points out that his National Insurance Number used to belong to someone else and other inconsistencies in his life. The story gets really weird from here.
Is Tom really Tommy, brought into this world by a magic acrostic written by his father? Is he the son of eastern European immigrants on permanent loan to help an old man sell books? Is he the new Messiah? The first trade answers none of these questions, and makes me want to pick up the next one as soon as I can. The only complaint I have is that as a Mike Carey and Peter Gross book, it feels like a subplot in a Lucifer book. I keep expecting to see Lucifer pop out and use Tom to his own advantage.
