"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

I started a post with this title last week. I was going to talk about this song and how it is my favorite song on my favorite Beatles album. But I realized that beyond the rather well known trivia that God played the guitar solo, I had very little else to fill out the post. So the title floated around in my head for a while. Bolstered by a conversation with Dave about Balloons and a Decision Tree, I decided to do a bit of a trivia quiz. Enjoy.

All you have to do is name the instrument. A little bit of trivia on the instrument wouldn't be out of order, but that's just bonus points. I decided on all string instruments this time. I may do another one later.

That balloon decision tree is even now on my whiteboard in draft form - the world will see it soon.

I'll email answers to you on this shortly.

Dave, just because you're smarter than the rest of us (or your brain holds more trivia) you don't have to hide your answers! Go ahead- name them in public!
1. Aoud (sp?). Our Egyptian one was stolen out of the back of our car in south Chicago in 1996 just after our return from Cairo. Sad day. Our renters' insurance paid for a "replacement", which ended up being a nice mandolin (which none of us can play). Lots of other things were taken, some were returned- long story. I highly recommend renters' insurance. Probably more trivia than you wanted to know.
2. Dulcimer
3. Banjo
4. Lyre
5. ? (cool)
6. Sitar
7. Hammered Dulcimer
8. ?
9. ?
10. ? bass instrument belonging in a jug band

1. Lute
2. Dulcimer, love it
3. Banjo
4. Lyre - dang it, maren, leave some for the rest of us!
5. oh, you did - the hard ones!
6. Sitar
7. Auto or electric harp
8. I tried, I really did, but alas...
9. Still alas...
10. Dave's secret basement band project (washtub bass)

What, no koto or nykelharpa?

Well, you'll all be happy to know you did every bit as well as me. I mistakenly said mandolin for #1, and had Zither for #7, and called #10 a Washtub bass (though Kari's name for it is better). Then Davey & I played a game over chat where I had to guess the origins of #5, #8, and #9 - any takers?

5. China/Mongolia?
8. Japan?
9. Southeast Asia...?

So many guesses. And many right answers. I'm afraid you'll have to wait one more day for all the answers; I'm still trying to get my Dad to guess on these.

Wow, I'm stumped on 5, 8 & 9. But I can say that I did once make a washtub bass. It sounded like crap. That was the night we also tried to make a bong out of an apple.

I am not MacGuyver.
