Today we play a little "Ancient
Heroes
Jeopardy" So make sure you put your answers in the form of a question!
1. He slew the Bull of Heaven and then tore off its hindquarters to threaten an overly
amorous goddess.
2. He defeated the Gorgon Medusa by viewing her only by her reflection on his shield.
3. He killed the dragon Fafnir and bathed in its blood, making him invulnerable except for one spot that was covered by a leaf.
4. He wrestled with a mysterious being until daybreak, and then took the name "One who has struggled with God"
5. He killed the fire breathing
Aillen to claim his birthright.
6. She joined the Army disguised as a man.
7. She was a legendary warrior and instructor who trained the hero
CĂșchulainn
8. He was a blacksmith who, after loosing 18 of his sons to a foreign ruler, led a revolt to free his people.
9. He lifted a mountain to find a healing herb, and later, assumed his five faced form to blow out five magic lamps at the same time and free his friend.
10. He roped the sun with his sister's hair so that it would slow down; thus with the days longer, his mother's cloth would dry better.
Let's face it, I had to look many of these up. I expect most of you to have to do it as well. If you know more than half without looking them up (spelling does not count) then you really should think about teaching at University. And no, even though the picture is of Hercules/Heracles, he is not one of the answers.

Wow. Okay. Here's my self-imposed ruleset:
1) No online searching; just my copy of Bullfinch's and any other books on my shelf.
2) 15 minutes.
I think I know 2, maybe 3, definitely 4, and maybe 10 right off the bat. I'll email Davey 15 minutes after this post so as not to ruin it for anyone else.
1. Who is Batman?
2. Who was Perseus?
3. Who was...uh...it's in a Wagner opera...
4. Who is Batman?
5. Who is Batman?
6. Who is Joan of Arc, also that chick in the Rings trilogy?
7. Who is Xena, Warrior Princess?
8. Who is Batman?
9. Who is Two-Face? Er, no! Wait...
10. Who is little Bruce Wayne?
Holy shit on a stick!
Ok, before I begin my attempt, let me just say this:
1) Dave owns a copy of Bullfinch's, he's automatically the winner
2) I hate Jeopardy, but props to Jeff for following directions!
3) Batman is truly a god among men
Here goes:
1 Who is Ajax! (I've always liked that name. I think it will be the middle name of my firstborn. Xavier Ajax Hubbard. Yeah, he's going to kill me in my sleep.)
2 Who is Perseus?
3 Who is... damn, forgot his name. the guardian of the Bifrost Bridge. Ham... Hamril? Something like that? I suck.
4 Who is ... man, now I'm even spacing on the names I know. seriously, I should just finish my coffee before I even try to keep going. Gilgamesh! That's the name I was thinking of? He was a righteously tough bastard, that Gilgamesh.
5 Who is Kieffer Sutherland?
6 ... who is Mulan?
7 Cuchulainn sounds Incan. Ok, anyone else notice how brazenly erect Mr. Hercules is? Also, those steroids have not been kind to his testicles... oh wait, if you view the picture full size, that's not an erect penis at all! in fact, I'm not really sure what's going on down there. He should get that looked at, seriously. Yes, I'm just stalling.
8 ... who is... crap, I know this one! I mean, clearly I don't, but unlike some of these, I've at least heard of this one.
9 who is Sinbad!
0 who is... ok, uhm, seriously, wtf? How about those twins from the Norse Mythos? Um... Fray and Frayja? was that them? Let's go with Frey then.
Good guesses gang.
Dave has a bunch right in the email he sent yesterday. I think I'll wait another day. Let some other people have a chance.
I am copying Dave's answers he sent in an email to me 15 minutes after he posted here. I will post the answers First thing Saturday Morning.
here's the best i could do with no internet in 15 mins:
1) Gilgamesh, the goddess is Ishtar
2) Perseus - I had to make sure because I remembered it from 'Clash of the Titans' but I knew they combined some stuff and invented other stuff.
3) Seigfried. Bullfinch's confirmed it
4) Jacob/Israel.
5) Definitely Irish, but I couldn't find a source on it. Finn McCool?
6) Mulan? like the Disney movie?
7) I found out his wife's name is Emer, daughter of Forgall the Wily, but I doubt it's her.
8) no idea
9) sounds Indian, but no idea.
10) Native American? it can't be Coyote, can it?
I'm sad there wasn't more in my sweet spot; norse mythology. now watch, 8-10 will all be norse and i'll feel like an idiot.
